 Ireland secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Deaf Futsal Championship in Sweden. Ireland will meet Turkey on Tuesday with a place in the semi-final after finishing runners up in Group A behind Russia.

Ireland 6-8 Russia

Earlier this week, Ireland Deaf narrowly beaten in their opening game of the campaign against 2010 European Runner up, Russia by 8-6 last Friday despite both finished levelled at half time with 3-3 in Orebro, Sweden.

 

Russia who showed more attacking impetus early in the second half and they scored 3 quick goals. Throughout the game, with traditional Irish fight back, Irish managed to come back from 8-4 to 8-6 within 5 minute to go. The Irish battled to the end but couldn’t put the ball back of Russians net! It was tremendously performance by the team after Russia beat the Irish 13-5 at the 2010 European Deaf Futsal Championships. Irish scorers; Joseph Watson (3); Sean Young (2); Jason Maguire

 

Sweden 3-6 Ireland

A narrow defeat to Russia 17 hours earlier in their opener meant Ireland needed a result to keep their championships alive. They take on host nation Sweden, where Sweden narrow wins over Japan 4-3 in 17 in their previous game.

 

In the opening 5 minute, both teams playing with a tight match in front of big home crowd before the Irish break the deadlock with nice finishing by Watson. Within few minute later, the home crowd went wild after Swedish scoring to bring back 1-1 after 6th minute. In the next 4 minutes, the Irish scored two quick goals by Byrne & Watson before half time. Irish team were up by 3-1 half time.

 

In second half, similar to Russian, the Swedish began to show attacking impetus early in second half but the Irish defence played super by closing them down before Byrne scored superbly with a long range shot from half way pitch to the Swedish s goal net, bottom goalpost that a keeper couldn’t save, to bring up 4-1 to the Irish after 30th minute. Swedish continue playing attack for the next 5 minute before the Irish managed to score two more goals from Young & Smith. At the end, the Swedish replied with two late goals. The coach, Junior, is pleased with the result and he knowledge the team who have been improving after the Russia match. It was nice to beat the home nation team. Ireland 14-3 Japan

In their final match at group stage, Japan were no match for the Irish, who maintained an intense pace from start to finish with Joseph Watson, a senior futsal international player, grabbing a haul of five goals. Justin Smith (2), Darren Dunne (2), Sean Young (2), Eamon Byrne, Christopher Corcoran and Jason Maguire all found the net to secure their quarter final berth.

Irish coach Gleudson Junior was delighted with the performance, complimenting his team on the control they exerted over the game.
